What can I expect from the Breast Augmentation or Breast Implant Surgery?
  • Enhancement of the size of your breasts.
  • Enhancement of the overall body contour, balance and proportions
  • Achieving an enhanced appearance, size, projection, etc., following pregnancy and/or weight loss.
  • Balancing the size of breasts when one is smaller than the other. Many women have one breast bigger than the other. This difference can be compensated by using two implants of different sizes.
  • It fills those breasts that appear to be 'empty', that is, with a lot of skin but little consistency, that some women have as a result of pregnancies or due to the aging process.

What I should not expect from the Breast Augmentation or Breast Implant Surgery?
  • Breast augmentation or Breast implant surgery does not lift hanging breasts.
  • While breast augmentation will enlarge the breasts, it will not alter basic defects in breast shape or form.
  • It does not correct asymmetries in the location of the areolas or nipples. If your problem is any of above three, please read Breast Lift
  • Major asymmetries may be improved but will not be completely corrected.

Am I a good Candidate for Breast Implant surgery?

If you're physically and mentally healthy, 18 years of age or older, not currently pregnant or nursing and have realistic expectations, you may be a good candidate.

What is a Breast Implant?

A breast implant is a soft shell or a rubber sac that is filled with silicone gel or saline (salt-water). The feel of the implant is very natural and close to the feel of the normal breast tissue. They are available in several different sizes to accommodate different patient's needs and surgeon's preference. The surface texture of the implant can be smooth or contoured.

Advantages and Disadvantages of cohesive silicone gel implants
  • They have a very natural consistency when touched
  • provide a more natural feel
  • Cohesive means that it tends to remain whole. This means that, even if the shell were to rupture, its content would not spill out. It would remain whole without any divisions. In the past, its content used to leak through the micropores of the shell and caused capsular contractures. Nowadays, these leakages have been almost completely reduced thanks to the cohesive properties of the content and to the new shells made of several superimposed layers.
  • They do not lose their volume as time goes by.
  • They do not make 'liquid' sounds during physical activities.
Advantages and Disadvantages of saline breast implants
  • If they rupture, the content of these implants is assimilated by the body and eliminated in a completely natural way. They lose their volume in a matter of hours and, since this change in volume can be seen immediately, they can be replaced as soon as you notice it.
  • If the liquid inside leaks out, it will not produce capsular contracture, the content is metabolized and eliminated naturally by the body. Nowadays, these leakages have been almost completely reduced thanks to the new shells made of several superimposed layers.
  • Saline implants are more likely to show ripples in the implant or the implant itself may appear less natural in small-breasted or reconstructive patients. This is especially important for very thin women who have little breast tissue to cover the implant, or for women who have a breast injury or need breast reconstruction. The small ripples in the implant may be more likely to show through the skin in these women.

When deciding which type of implant is best for you, discuss your options with your surgeon.

How is the breast implants surgery performed?

The augmentation and implant process begins by making a small incision approximately 1.5 inches (4 cm) long, either:

  • under the breast crease,
  • in the darker area of the areola, or
  • less frequently, in the armpit.
The surgeon will determine which one of the three incisions is better for you, according to your body and the kind of implant chosen.

The addition of the implant includes lifting the breast tissue and creating a pocket for insertion of the implant. The implant itself, a soft envelope of saline or silicone, is then inserted behind the breast to create size, volume and shape.

Implants are always placed behind the mammary gland, but depending on the patient's anatomy, the size of the implant, the surgeon's technique, etc., the implants can be placed in two possible locations:

  • Directly behind the breast tissue, in front of the pectoral muscle (sub glandular): this location is advisable for women who do intense physical exercises with their arms.
  • Underneath the muscles of the chest wall (sub-muscular): This procedure is more complicated and the recovery is more painful, but the muscles prevent the implant's outline to be seen under the skin, giving the breast a more natural look. Placed here, the implants will interfere less in future mammograms.
Finally, the plastic surgeon inserts the drainage tubes and closes the incisions with sutures.

How long is the recovery time? When can I resume my activities?

Since breast augmentation stretches delicate tissue, it can be painful, especially if implants are placed under the chest muscle. Typically, the pain improves as quickly as 48 hours after the operation and can be managed by medication.

The first dressing is done at 48 hrs, after which you would be allowed to shower. Thereafter, dressing changes can be done by yourself and you would require wearing a sports bra for support for about 10-12 days until the stitches are taken off.
Rigorous sports and gym can be resumed after a month, although you may start light exercises like tread mill activity as early as 2 weeks after the surgery

What will be the outcome of the breast augmentation surgery?

The outcome of Breast Augmentation is instant, quite satisfactory and successful. A successful augmentation will give you fuller breasts that better proportion with your overall body size and physique. The procedure may also lead to reduced sagginess and increased firmness of the breasts.

Will my breasts look and feel natural?

Yes, very much. During the first few weeks your breasts will feel firm and swollen, but once the breasts have settled, they’ll soften to a more natural appearance and feel.

Will I experience any pain?

Most women experience some tenderness (rather than actual pain) following breast enlargement surgery and take pain relief for up to one week afterwards.

Are Breast Implants Safe?

Yes, the breast implants are completely safe. Many worldwide studies have shown that there appears to be no increased illness or systemic diseases caused by saline or gel implants.
